Electrochemical water splitting is a carbon-neutral approach to convert renewable energy into hydrogen. Electrocatalysts must minimize overpotentials for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER)/ Oxygen Evolution Reaction (OER) to reduce energy loss and costs. Current state of the art electrolysers use Ruthenium and Iridium as catalysts which are both scarce and prohibitively expensive. As a result, there is a pressing need to create cost-effective and earth abundant electrocatalysts. High-entropy alloy nanoparticles (HEA-NPs), composed of five or more elements, offer a versatile solution promising superior performance, enabling tuneable activity, excellent thermal and chemical stability, and a synergistic catalytic effect.
